Saturday Sampler: Make up your mind

Indecision becomes decision with time.
~Author Unknown

I was so stoked about my Thursday morning run. My partner usually texts me when he is on his way. When he didn't text I felt like maybe he wouldn't make it. When he was 10 minutes late I knew he wouldn't make it. During this time I paced my dinning room with my workout clothes and sneakers on. I was thinking that I was so tired and how nice it would have been to sleep in. I was also secretly hoping he wouldn't come so I could crawl back into bed. Then came the guilt. I don't want to be fat. I want to be fit. I should always choose working out over being lazy. This particular night my daughter had gotten up in the middle of the night so it was a great excuse to say I need sleep. Instead I had internal dialogue from 5:15 to 5:55. I considered hopping on the bike trainer too. The fact is I really wanted to sleep, but felt too guilty giving into that. I crawled into bed at 5:55 for "10 minute" which turned into 20 which turned into speeding to make it to work on time. Do you do this to yourself?

If you are wondering why I didn't just go run alone you'll have to read this POST from last fall that has me a little skiddish about running solo. The other part is that it was garbage day and that tends to bring in visitors to the neighborhood. They are harmless I am sure, but strangers nonetheless. I just need to go for it and get over the fear, maybe take one or both of the dogs...something?!

Lesson: Have a plan B. I woke up tired, I should have made the decision right then and there that I would go back to bed. Instead I neither got a workout or sleep. Total lose-lose.

Thursday night was almost fantastic, farmers market with my friend W was great. I got enormous organic carrots, golden beets and stopped in the cheese shop for a few sampler sizes of cheese. They are generally .1-.3 lb in size. I got three!

The cheese actually turn out to be the perfect lunch or breakfast size portion. I took a Fiscalli badaged wrapped cheddar and a few slices of baguette to work Friday morning for breakfast. That and a few fresh apricots. Delicious! Why was it only "almost" fantastic? My Bug had a complete blow out as we were leaving. Stripping down a 1 1/2 yr old in a parking garage and going through what seemed like an entire pack of wipes turned out to be quite the adventure. Ah, the joys of parenting. My friend W, totally elevated to saint status for salvaging the wreckage called the stroller the Bug was sitting in.

Yesterday's pool workout turned into a flip turn lesson. I was doing great in the shallows, no problem. I am generally good at mechanics so I wasn't surprised that I was good at it quickly. Then we moved to the deep end and I failed. Seriously, totally failed. I looked like a damn clown flipping and coming up hitting my head on the lane line for pushing off crooked. Then coming up a lane over another time. My coach wants us to flip and be totally face up to the sky when are feet hit and as soon as we push off then turn over. I being the impatient person that I am, got to the deep end and was starting to turn before I pushed off and my feet were totally landing on the wall wrong. Everyone says I'll get better with practice. I personally am frustrated that I wasn't awesome at it before I left the pool. This is how I decided to wreck my diet at 10PM Friday night. I don't know why I do this to myself. Actually I didn't eat any pizza, but devoured like 5 breadsticks.
Today Super Hubby is at a golf tournament and left at 4:30 this AM. I got a text at 7:45 am inviting me to run. The kids were still in bed so the double jogger wasn't an option, I was totally bummed. Although I had to decline that invite, I got to say yes to the next which was for a 20-25 mile bike ride tomorrow morning. If that wasn't a great start to my day, we had a great tot t-ball game and we have a birthday party this afternoon. Wahoo! If my hubby is back early enough maybe I can run tonight.

Why I Kick A$$: I decided against the oreo cookie milk shake Thursday, all 810 calories of it.

The Turn Around: Positive Self Talk

Our life always expresses
the result of our dominant thoughts.
~Soren Kierkegaard

Wednesday HUMP day sounds funny, but like an out and back run it marks the turn around to the work week. I am so ready for a change and it starts with my mind set. Positive Self Talk. I hope, I'll try, and Maybe replaced by "I Will." That is a little extreme, but generally the idea is to just be more glass half full. Monday I put it out there on my FB that this was going to be a great week, Tuesday I said it would be an awesome day and today...well it really was an awesome day. This week is my first full week of work in 7 weeks. Yes I am employed, but I have had one thing or another leading to one day or a few days off each week for 7 weeks. Days off for this and that make it hard to do 40 hours or work in significantly less than 40 hours a week.

As most or you know it has been pretty crazy around here and I am not the consistent athlete I want to be. To continue this trend, I stayed up too late Sunday night eating Piroshki's from the Jewish food fair and skipped my "first day back" to Master's swim Monday morning. I stayed up late again Monday night and did not go out on a solo AM run Tuesday. Do not fret faithful readers, I did go to my TRI Club monthly meeting Tuesday night. It was just the motivation I needed. Now before I shift gears into my attempt at more consistent positive self talk, I will tell you that I was the fattest person there. People were wearing shorts, showing off muscle tone and tans, cute sneakers and chatting about last weekend's TRI events. I have not raced a TRI yet this season, I am not tan, I showed up in my work clothes and flip flops. I did have my purple glitter toenail polish going for me, but my outfit and fitness level was not screaming athlete in this crowd. While this sounds like I am putting myself down, actually it really reminded me that I like muscular legs, a litte tan and an overall athletic presence.

The other thing I did at this meeting was...wait for it... I.ASKED.FOR.HELP. OMG, phew, glad I got that off my chest. Seriously, I felt like I was checking myself into rehab and felt slightly humiliated to admit I needed help. I was also so excited that I was going to get it. I basically told one of our senior members that while I didn't need a mentor to push me in specific workouts (I am currently schedule challenged), I do need someone to check in with. Someone who will ask how my week went, high five me when I am on track and help motivate me when I start to fall off track. I also wrote my check for Master's swim for the month of June. I kept saying to myself the whole month of May, that I would pay when I went to swim and what happened? I didn't not swim at all in May. I figured writing that check would increase the odds of me showing up to swim this morning. I was also so motivated after the meeting last night that I hooked up my iPhone Netflix to the TV in my hubby's man room, aired up my bike tires and jumped on the trainer. I jumped on the bike trainer for 45 min at 10PM. What was I thinking? Then, I had so much exercise adrenaline that I foam rolled and stretched before bed. Again, went to bed way too late.

It was crazy hard to wake up this morning, but I did and went to swim. I was 15 minutes late, but was still able to get in 1700 yards done. 200 start, 200 form, 40x25s, 300 cool down. Tonight I tried to hit the track workout, but apparently the high school track that we were at also dubs as a helicopter landing site for medical transport. I was late of course, got one lap in and then we were locked in the track area when emergency vehicles arrived and moved to the stands to keep the track and field available for the helicopter. I ran some stairs, did step ups, there was a concrete area where I did some dynamic warm up stretches, then more static stretching. By the time we could leave, I had no more time for the track. Some work is better than none I guess. On the schedule for tomorrow: 3 miles at 5:15am, work and hopefully the evening farmers market. It will be a good day.

Monday is the official start to Marathon training, I am super excited. I am nailing down some trail runs to register for to ensure I do my long runs and that the mileage is on quality, hilly, challenging terrain. The Nike Women's Marathon SF has a few little climbs so long runs on hilly trails will definitely do the trick in training.

Why I Kick A$$: 2 work outs today...ok more like 1 and a half, but I'll take it.

Sunday Summary: Too Much Good Stuff

Sleep 'til you're hungry,
eat 'til you're sleepy.
~Author Unknown

I so wanted to post yesterday, but also tried to not to over do it and wait for today instead. Not that I had a bazillion things to say because right now all I can remember is I wanted to post yesterday and right now I have no frick'n idea about what. Short term memory loss? How was everyone's weekend? Ours started out with sleeping late on Saturday, like really late. 9:45AM late. My son was up, but we went ahead and let netflix babysit The Duder while Super Hubby, The Bug and I laid in bed. Dreamy. Trip to bagels, farmers market, a little Mary Kay party then the most amazing rainbow ever. Ah ha! That was it, I wanted to blog about this rainbow. We saw it near the local levy and it was literally right on top of us, once we got into our neighborhood the light pollution pushed it way, but we could still see the whole thing end to end. I think that is what I wanted to blog about yesterday. Was way more exciting than I am articulating right now. I probably should have typed more about the fun friend time at the Mary Kay thing or the products I bought. Oooh, even better I could've talked more about how I cleaned out every stand at Farmer's Market of their Beets and roasted the for the week... with carrots. Delious! P.S. I need help with cooking fresh Fava Beans.

Today my basketball game was cancelled because too many of us couldn't make it to the game, I was bummed, but slightly happy because it meant we could do dinner with a large group of friends. In addition to eating pizza for dinner, I spent all day at our Jewish Food Fair eating or purchasing way too much food. I am excited to eat, but not excited to gain weight...will have to figure out how to balance that out with Potato Piroshki's, Dobos Torte, Sour Cream Chocoloate Chip Coffee Cake, Cheese Cake, Chocolate Chip Cheese Cake, Chocolate Covered Strawberry's, Latke's, Baklava and Banana Bread all in my fridge. Actually I already ate the strawberries and have plans to give the Banana Bread to a grieving family. I know too much food, but it all freezes well AND it was for a good cause. Did I mention the corned beef sandwiches for lunch. Crazy day, obviously not calorie counting today.
Do you go Crazy at Fairs, Carnivals or Farmer's Markets?
The good news is I ran into my running partner whom I haven't run with in like 2 weeks and we have agreed we need to get started again. Good agreement.

Why I Kick A$$: All 132 of my cakes sold today no problem.
